Avature Unveils Cortex, a Cognitive Layer for Enterprise Execution
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz., Nov. 3, 2026 /PRNewswire/ — Avature, a provider of configurable enterprise software, today announced Cortex, an intelligent cognitive layer that expands human capabilities by planning and coordinating work across AI agents, applications and people. Available to select customers as a native Avature solution, Cortex uses customers’ existing business context to let users direct work and understand agent activity and outcomes, while giving IT control and visibility over execution.
As AI agents work across applications, enterprises must translate human goals and constraints into coordinated execution and make agent actions, results and uncertainty clear enough for people to direct next steps.
“Competitive advantage comes from changing how work gets done,” said Dimitri Boylan, CEO and Founder of Avature. “Companies must decide where AI can act, where fixed rules apply and where human judgment is essential. Cortex clarifies those choices so companies can redesign processes, improve performance and expand what their people can accomplish.”
For more than 20 years, Avature’s configurable platform has let customers define how they operate through their own data models, workflows, business rules and permissions. Cortex uses this foundation to help agents understand records, follow processes and act within organizational boundaries.
How Cortex Coordinates Work
Cortex receives instructions through Avature Copilot or connected workplace messaging tools, or starts work from an event or existing process. It breaks work into tasks, identifies dependencies and routes steps to specialized agents, people or deterministic application workflows when the path must stay fixed. Users can refine instructions in natural language while Cortex tracks handoffs and reports progress, obstacles and uncertainty.
After a candidate accepts an offer, for example, a hiring manager can ask Cortex through a workplace messaging app to coordinate onboarding. Using the role, location and start date, Cortex plans steps such as transferring approved details to the HRIS, collecting documents, initiating a background check and requesting equipment through an IT fulfillment agent.
If an approval stalls, Cortex identifies who must act and flags potential start-date delays. Users can monitor progress and intervene, with each step governed by organizational policies and permissions.
Enterprise Context and Connections at Runtime
At runtime, each agent retrieves relevant enterprise and record context from customers’ Avature data models, workflows and business rules within its permissions. Cortex maintains memory and state across interactions, letting users refine direction without losing progress or repeating background information.
Cortex connects enterprise agents and applications through Avature’s integration framework and open protocols, including MCP and A2A, carrying context and results across handoffs. Purpose-built bots can complete steps through legacy systems’ existing interfaces.
Control and Visibility for IT
Cortex governs all agents, including third-party agents, through identities, permissions, allowed actions and approval requirements. Guardrails support data privacy and output quality.
The Agent Command Center shows IT teams running agents, their models and costs. Diagnostics identify cross-system failures and bottlenecks, while budget limits keep usage within organizational boundaries.
“Governance and orchestration put agents to work within clear boundaries. As AI advances, the larger opportunity is to let customers change models, agents or processes as they learn what works,” Boylan added. “Cortex brings organizational context into execution so people can work alongside agents and bots, using results to adapt the platform and create new capabilities. That’s the next era of enterprise software.”
